Template talk:Timeline geological timescale

Latest comment: 14 years ago by Michael C Price in topic Error!

A user asked me to fix the formatting problems on Template:Timeline Geological Timescale to make the font more readable. It seems that the additions of the Precambrian and the Quaternary to the template on April 25 resulted in a scrunching of the text rendering it a bit difficult to read. I'm not familiar enough with the code used to fix the problem - so I thought I'd ask here. As the Precambrian and Quaternary have both been sorta deserted by the timescale committee folks, maybe they don't need to be in the template? Vsmith 02:01, 14 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

In 2008 there will be a voting in the Subcommission on Quaternary Stratigraphy (International Commission on Stratigraphy) whether Quaternary should be assimilated with Neogene link. Like when Pluto was elected as a dwarf planet. It is very likely that Quartenary will become an informal term, but in the meantime it is correct. Regarding Precambrian, it is informal, but a lot of people use the term due to the lack of replacement. Necessary Evil 08:45, 14 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

While checking the template I noticed a more serious (for some) problem. I access via Hughs satellite connection at home and must use the secure servor to stay logged in. The problem is that the links on the template just don't work with the secure servor - go to https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Template:Timeline_Geological_Timescale and see what I mean. Wiki returns a Wiki does not exist message when a link in the template is clicked. Any ideas about the problem? Vsmith 02:01, 14 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Error!

edit

In the top chart, the Ediacaran is placed in the Phanerozoic. This is wrong. Adam Cuerden talk 14:29, 16 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

It's just the links are messed up. Adam Cuerden talk 14:30, 16 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

The Ediacaran link seems to be busted: I get Cryogenian when I try to click on it. I also lack the skills necessary to attempt to fix this. -- Strangelv 22:08, 11 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

If you click on the orange square, neighboring the Ediacaran-square, you'll get to Ediacaran. Funny isn't it? Necessary Evil 23:13, 11 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
It seems all the times with hypernated descriptions are unlinkable, and they're inheriting their links from their neighbours. Hence "cryo-genian" inherits from "edicaran", or "sil-urian" from "ordovician" etc. No obvious fix, though. --Michael C. Price talk 23:06, 15 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Replacement

edit

Hi,

In order to produce a functional alternative to the buggy <timeline> syntax, I've created a dynamic alternative to this page here, rendering this page largely obsolete. Comments are very welcome.
