Requested edit 10 July 2021

edit

I wish to create a new section in this template's documentation.
I would like to request that the available parameters be added to the new section, as demonstrated below:

== Usage ==
You may either use {{tl|ToDo}} by itself for the default message or you may add a custom message as an optional parameter.

{| class="wikitable"
!Template !! Result
|-
|{{tlx|ToDo}} || {{ToDo}}
|-
|{{tlx|ToDo|Custom message}} || {{ToDo|Custom message}}
|}

The purpose of this edit is for the inclusion of the following demonstration:

{{ToDo|Custom message:}} Sample text will produce   Custom message: Sample text.

Note, leaving the custom message piped but blank will produce an artifact apostrophe, with undesired effects:

{{ToDo|}}Sample text will produce    Sample text.

If someone wishes to use this template as a bullet without a message, they must add one of the html space codes:

{{ToDo| }}Sample text will produce    Sample text.

Thank you for your review. — CJDOS, Sheridan, OR (talk) 23:37, 10 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

To editor CJDOS, Sheridan, OR:   Not done: The documentation page's protection level has changed since this request was placed. You should now be able to edit the /doc page yourself. If you still seem to be unable to, please reopen the request with further details. The template does already have the ability to change the text by use of the first unnamed parameter, |1=Custom message (and of course the "1=" can be omitted as long as the custom message is typed after the first pipe). Thank you for this good catch on two important levels! P.I. Ellsworth  ed. put'r there 15:26, 11 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. Actually I believe there was a workaround that I could have used, but I felt it would have been impolite to have exploited it. To the right of § See also is This list: view · talk · edit. I believe all I needed to do was to edit § See alsowhich I could do despite the page protection—and put the new section at the very top of the edit window [between the Documentation subpage and "This list" templates]. — CJDOS, Sheridan, OR (talk) 18:09, 11 July 2021 (UTC) (edited 18:37, 11 July 2021 (UTC))Reply
To editor CJDOS, Sheridan, OR: if you look at the edit screen of the template documentation, you'll see in the See also section the {{Done/See also}} template, which is only semi-protected. So yes, you could have edited that template, but you wouldn't have been able to reposition the Usage section without being able to edit this template. Of course now that we've fixed that and because of your request the separate, unprotected /doc page has been created, you can edit the entire documentation page. That was one important level of your "good catch", because all protected templates should have separate, unprotected /doc pages. Of course the other important level of your "good catch" was your Usage section. This template has had the ability to change the text since it was first created more than ten years ago, but it never let editors know it had that capability. Until now. Thanks again!
