editprotected The logic generating year, month and days have been moved to For year month day. Can an admin incorporate this in the template so we do this calculation in one template (a lot of other templates do the same calculation Template:User Wikimedian For, Template:User Admin For, etc.). Proposing a new image

I would like to suggest that at long last the image used for this userbox be changed. Rather than change it unilaterally I would propose it here on the talk page first. I was perusing the commons and took note of the following images, each of which I think is preferable to what appears to be a bloody 24 on the calendar currently. Some suggestions:

  - File:Fairytale date.png
  - File:Config-date.png
  - File:Dates.png
  - File:Crystal Clear app date.png
  - File:Crystal 128 date.png
  - File:Red clock.png
  - File:Crystal Clear app karm.png

Any thoughts? |► ϋrbanяenewaℓTALK ◄| 19:31, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

Sounds sensible. I'd probably go for a full month calendar ala crystal 128 date or a clock face. -- samj inout 13:46, 1 March 2009 (UTC)
Sounds sensible indeed. I highly suggest going for the Wikipedia logo since this is so related to Wikipedia! Jwikiediting (talk) 14:30, 22 April 2012 (UTC)

Wikipedia birthdays?

I was thinking it would be nice to have the template show a special message when it's that user's "Wikipedia birthday" (ie, exactly X years since that user joined WP). I threw together a mock-up at User:Rjanag/Template:User Wikipedian For, which is the same as this userbox but has a tiny bit of extra code to both change the message to "Today is this user's WikiBirthday" and to temporarily add that user to a category of WikiBirthdays (it would automatically remove the category once the current date is no longer the same as the date of joining). There's an example at the sandbox of what it would look like: [2]. Does anyone think it would be worthwhile to update the userbox with this stuff? rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 17:36, 8 March 2009 (UTC)

I didn't notice this message before, but I noticed when someone edited it in. I think this is a terrible idea. It makes me cringe, and frankly, if there turns out to be consensus for it, I won't use this template any more. Hesperian 22:15, 11 March 2009 (UTC)
Could you please explain why you think it's a bad idea? I'm not offended if you don't like it; I would just like to know why. rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 22:19, 11 March 2009 (UTC)
Valuing/tracking how long you've been here is a far cry from celebrating your "WikiBirthday". I find the latter to be silly and embarrassing. I don't have a problem if other people like the idea, but by working it into this template you are forcing every user of it to get on board. Hesperian 22:52, 11 March 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, it's a silly word to use, and I could always change it (that was just the first thing that popped into my head). I mean, cookies are silly too; I figured it would just be a nice gesture and wouldn't hurt anyone. I guess I'll wait and here if anyone else has an opinion (although they probably don't; I don't think many people watch this page). rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 23:03, 11 March 2009 (UTC)
Also, please keep in mind that it would be possible to remove the text that says "today is this user's birthday" or whatever but still keep the part of the text that populates Category:Current Wikipedia birthdays. That way there would be no change at all to what shows up on your userbox, but there would still be a way to see who's in the category. (For example, it was through that category that I noticed User:Hiberniantears joined exactly 4 years ago today. Who knows, someone might want to give him a cookie or something. Again, it's silly, but is it hurting anyone?) rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 23:09, 11 March 2009 (UTC)
I've restored the functionality but with an optout. Hesperian 23:36, 11 March 2009 (UTC)
That seems like a good compromise. Thanks, rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 23:40, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

Are there any objections or comments on modifying the format so that an option exists to make the infobox text "on Wikipedia" into a link to the User Creation Log?

This can be accomplished by changing this row:

| info = {{#ifeq:CURRENTYEAR|{}|{{#ifeq:CURRENTMONTH|{}|{{#ifeq:CURRENTDAY|{}|Today is this user's first day on Wikipedia.<div style="display:none;">}}}}}}{{#ifeq:{yes}|no||{{#ifeq:CURRENTMONTH|{}|{{#ifeq:CURRENTDAY|{}|Today is this user's WikiBirthday.<includeonly></includeonly>}}}}}} This user has been on Wikipedia for <br /> {{For year month day|year={2005}|month={12}|day={31} }}.{{#ifeq:CURRENTYEAR|{}|{{#ifeq:CURRENTMONTH|{}|{{#ifeq:CURRENTDAY|{}|</div>}}}}}}

to instead read as:

| info = <div class="plainlinks neverexpand">{{#ifeq:CURRENTYEAR|{}|{{#ifeq:CURRENTMONTH|{}|{{#ifeq:CURRENTDAY|{}|Today is this user's first day on Wikipedia.<div style="display:none;">}}}}}}{{#ifeq:{yes}|no||{{#ifeq:CURRENTMONTH|{}|{{#ifeq:CURRENTDAY|{}|Today is this user's WikiBirthday.<includeonly></includeonly>}}}}}} This user has been {{#if:{}|on Wikipedia|on Wikipedia}} for </br> {{For year month day|year={2005}|month={12}|day={31} }}.{{#ifeq:CURRENTYEAR|{}|{{#ifeq:CURRENTMONTH|{}|{{#ifeq:CURRENTDAY|{}|</div>}}}}}}</div>

The primary differences are the use of "plainlinks" for formatting, and the addition of code so that if the argumant "link" contains any value, then "on Wikipedia" becomes hyperlinked to the User Creation Log of the user on whose page the template is attached.

A test / example of the change can be found at User:Barek/userboxes/wikipedian. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 18:16, 11 January 2010 (UTC)

Option to modify phrase?

Can we please add an optional parameter ("status", in the examples below) to allow modification of the phrase "on Wikipedia", thus saving work creating a lot of duplicate user templates for different but similar uses? Examples:

 • , without the optional argument, would display the normal current text of "This user has been on Wikipedia for X years, Y months, and Z days."
 • would display "This user has been on vacation for X years, Y months, and Z days."
 • would display "This user has been on vacation for X years, Y months, and Z days."
 • would display "This user has been a developer for X years, Y months, and Z days."

Nowrap instead of br

First off, unless there's something in XML/HTML I'm not aware of, the </br> is malformed...it should be <br />. But in any case, I'd like to recommend getting rid of the tag altogether and using:

{{Nowrap|{{For year month day|year={2005}|month={12}|day={31}}}}}

This will allow cases like "no days at all" to not look quite so silly, while still ensuring that the duration all stays on one line. In other words, you'd get this:

instead of this:

The possible downside to that is that the time wouldn't be displayed in the same place on all boxes , for example (examples removed as they became invalid in light of the ensuing discussion...Nowrap vs. br would only be visible in most cases if UB text was changed from what it is now):

Opinions? —RobinHood70 (talkcontribs) 19:19, 7 July 2010 (UTC)

 Today is this user's first day on Wikipedia.
Sorry, I inadvertently included the "first day" text in all my examples. Now removed.
As it stands now, the change would only affect the formatting on the person's first day, yes. I think Nowrap for all the time spans is still the better way to go in the long run, just in case the wording is ever changed or whatever, but the only one that's currently ugly is the wrapping on the user's first day, so that could certainly be corrected as 117Avenue suggested. —RobinHood70 (talkcontribs) 05:52, 9 July 2010 (UTC)

I've made some tweaks to the sandbox code; the most important correction is proper support for missing variables, so if you just say "month=3" and nothing else the template assumes you're talking about March this year and not March of 2005. There are also some tweaks to the wrapping code. All of the sub-templates have their own sandboxed and testcases if people want to poke about. Float needs to be passed to the user box

Right now, this has float forced to left. No choice. It has to float left. It calls the userbox, which allows you to include your own choice of a value for float. So, this template should allow float as a parameter and pass that to the userbox. Then, the user could have float=right or float=none. There is no reason that float=left should be forced on everyone. -- kainaw 12:39, 10 August 2011 (UTC)

I tried using the "link=true" parameter to link "on Wikipedia" to the user creation log, but the link target has no results: this is what the link takes me to (with my username in the "target" box) and this is what it should take me to (with my username in the "performer" box). הסרפד (Hasirpad) [formerly Ratz...bo] 06:02, 18 December 2012 (UTC)

That link should work with the username in the target box (e.g. for me). I'm not sure why it doesn't for you; this might be a bug in MediaWiki. Unfortunately, using "performer" doesn't work for users who had their account created by someone else using the Request an account process. For users who created accounts on behalf of others, using "performer" lists all of the accounts they created, in addition to their own. See for yourself:

Interesting. Also interesting is that when I use my old username (Ratzd'mishukribo) as the "target", I can find myself in the user creation log - as הסרפד, of course. Looks like the bug is related to having a renamed account – I checked a handful of other renamed accounts, and they have the same problem. For example, will give the userbox on the right, where the link should work. – PartTimeGnome (talk | contribs) 00:03, 19 December 2012 (UTC)

On second thought, that's not too difficult to calculate. Please sync the template with my latest revision to the sandbox. Just a thought: It would be better if the calculation for ambiguous dates (i.e. omitted month or day) and the text for missing dates ("some time") was in Template:for year month day, so the other templates that perform similar date calculations can take advantage of it. User Wikipedian for and the other templates would then use the code {{For year month day|year={}|month={}|day={}}} to call it.

I wouldn't have an objection to it, either. Since it's not used in article space, I don't see the template as particularly high-risk. rʨanaɢ (talk) 12:58, 24 July 2013 (UTC)
I also support downgrading the protection. Userboxes are not used in articles or anywhere particularly prominent. There are fewer than 7500 transclusions of this template. – PartTimeGnome (talk | contribs) 20:18, 24 July 2013 (UTC)
I went ahead and changed it to semi-protection. If anyone objects we can discuss it more. rʨanaɢ (talk) 01:13, 25 July 2013 (UTC)
Thank you. I think semi-protection is about right. – PartTimeGnome (talk | contribs) 17:18, 25 July 2013 (UTC)
