Template talk:User link
Notifications
editDoes this template send notifications? czar ♔ 01:44, 1 October 2013 (UTC)
- Going with "yes" since u is listed at Wikipedia:Notifications#Features czar ♔ 01:46, 1 October 2013 (UTC)
- Actually it doesn't, by itself. But note the discussion below. ★NealMcB★ (talk) 21:24, 12 July 2015 (UTC)
This template documentation is wrong
editUse of User is different from use of User link or U.
But the documentation says that using User shows up as the same as U.
Can someone fix this? — Cirt (talk) 03:00, 19 November 2013 (UTC)
- It was a bad edit by Thnidu a few months back.
- I have fixed it. Please note, template doc pages are not normally protected. --Redrose64 (talk) 14:18, 19 November 2013 (UTC)
- @Redrose64 Ooops!

substing this template
editWhen subst'ing this template you end up with raw parser functions substed. Can we get it fixed to not include those? Werieth (talk) 14:15, 1 April 2014 (UTC)
Pipelinking, in effect, seems to work
editIt's not mentioned on the template page, but Example gives Nickname, exactly as Nickname gives Nickname. --Middle 8 (leave me alone • talk to me • COI?) 20:53, 14 August 2014 (UTC)
Does not notify user
editI just ran a quick test with the help of another editor: the Username template does not notify the editor as the Username template and the manually done User:Username) does. I will no longer use the U template in that case. Prhartcom (talk) 15:22, 10 February 2015 (UTC)
- Prhartcom: did you receive a notification for this post? --Redrose64 (talk) 16:54, 10 February 2015 (UTC)
- Redrose64, Yes I did, I received a notification from your use of the U template, so please tell me what happened? I see no changes have been made to the template today, and I feel certain my earlier test with the U template was conclusive. Thanks. Prhartcom (talk) 19:21, 10 February 2015 (UTC)
- This is one of the things that Quiddity (WMF) (talk · contribs) and others are investigating at phab:T78424, there are related threads at WT:Echo and Template talk:Reply to. One thing is certain: it's not a problem with the template, although it might be a problem with the way that the template is being used. For example, in this edit, the
Prhartcom
is inside a file link, which might cause it to be skipped by the notifications system. In other cases, the notification might be broken by the presence of invisible control characters (like the U+200E Left-to-right mark) immediately before the closing double braces, although the link is still clickable. --Redrose64 (talk) 19:51, 10 February 2015 (UTC)- Thanks for those threads. I just tried another U template test (straightforward this time) and it didn't work, dang it. Cheers. Prhartcom (talk) 22:28, 10 February 2015 (UTC)

- Most/All mention-errors should be fixed now, with code pushed to all wikis ~3 hours ago. Please keep an eye out, and ping me with any newer instances of problems. (And thanks again for all the details so far). --Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 20:22, 11 February 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks Quiddity (WMF), I have just proved for myself at least that the notification system is indeed working when using the U template. Thanks so much for your expertise. Prhartcom (talk) 21:14, 11 February 2015 (UTC)
document the notification
editIf the template is intended to, and does notify the user, it would be helpful if the doc page said so explicitly. And in that case if the "Alternative" described - User:Example
- does not notify the usr, it would be helpful to say so (because it does not have the same "desired result"). Mitch Ames (talk) 00:13, 6 June 2015 (UTC)
- The template does not notify a user, nor is it intended to; in fact, it pre-dates the notifications system by seven years. Its purpose is to create a link to a user page, nothing more. Under some circumstances, a notification is sent, but that is a side-effect: it happens whenever the conditions described at WP:Echo are met. These conditions include the addition of a link to a user page at the same time as the addition of a signature, regardless of the template (or other method) used to create that link. It even happens when a normal untemplated wikilink is used, like this: User:Mitch Ames. --Redrose64 (talk) 11:27, 6 June 2015 (UTC)
- OK, thank for the explanation. Mitch Ames (talk) 11:55, 6 June 2015 (UTC)
- User:Redrose64, on a related note, is there a template that will guarantee that the user receives a notification (aside from a user talk post)? Oiyarbepsy (talk) 03:06, 24 March 2018 (UTC)
- No. Notifications have nothing to do with templates. It is the userpage link together with a signature, both being in a new post, that perform the notification. Like this: User:Oiyarbepsy. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 09:58, 24 March 2018 (UTC)
Link to talk
editI have a question to the technically minded folks around here: If there is no used page (either here or meta), would it be possible for this template to automatically link to the user talk page instead? Oiyarbepsy (talk) 02:58, 24 March 2018 (UTC)
Broken template
editSomething is causing the template to be broken. See Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Jean-Philippe Susilovic, where the is displayed as {}. PS I have also opened a village pump thread Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)#Broken_template. Please reply there. --Tyw7 (🗣️ Talk) — If (reply) then (ping me) 20:24, 19 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Tyw7: You also asked this at WP:VPT. Please see WP:MULTI. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 20:40, 19 September 2018 (UTC)
- Redrose64, I've included the link to the Village Pump thread below. I thought the pump might get more eyes on the bug. --Tyw7 (🗣️ Talk) — If (reply) then (ping me) 20:49, 19 September 2018 (UTC)

The sandbox template takes up less wikicode. Change the current template to the sandbox version. JsfasdF252 (talk) 02:02, 14 February 2021 (UTC)
- Not done There's a reason for the extra wikicode, it's to allow the template to be substituted cleanly. * Pppery * it has begun... 16:45, 14 February 2021 (UTC)
