Template talk:Village pump

Latest comment: 1 month ago by Redrose64 in topic Adding a button for the homepage

Template:Villagepump redirects to Template:Villagepump, so I moved MediaWiki talk:Villagepump to "Template talk: Villagepump" (this page; there was no page with this name before).

Is it just now or has it always been that links to other languages included here don't work on Wikipedia:Village_pump ? -- User:Docu

Uh-Oh! Half the mark-up's gone screwy! Compare this page with how it appears on Village Pump. <nowiki> tags are visible and external links aren't rendering correctly. Big bad! --HappyDog 13:15, 1 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Some settings may have changed since we first used this. -- User:Docu

I'll move the interlanguage links back inline. Martin 13:33, 1 Feb 2004 (UTC)

It's not just the interlanguage links, the external link and the interwiki links are gone as well. -- User:Docu

Hmm, the <nowiki> tags (boy does that look silly in the source!) seem to be being escaped into >nowiki< rather than being interpreted as wiki markup when the text is included. My uninformed guess would be that the stages of including, parsing and html escaping are happening in the wrong order somehow (getting escaping right is always a headache) - IMSoP 18:45, 1 Feb 2004 (UTC)

The end key doesn't only work in Internet Explorer. I use Mozilla Firefox and the end key does the same thing. --Ed Senft! 19:22, 13 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Also, the END key text was added after someone requesting a link to 'most recent additions' (i.e. jump to bottom of page) on the pump. This removed the need for the link. I think a larger issue is that the END key won't work properly if the page isn't fully loaded, as it will go to the end of what's loaded so far. I added the text, and I'm happy to see it removed, so long as people know why it was added in the first place. --HappyDog 00:56, 14 Feb 2004 (UTC)

I don't think it's worth adding a line to the pump based on a request by one person. Better to educate that one person on the correct use of their browser, rather than forcing the information on everyone, I would have thought. Perhaps add it to the wikipedia:FAQ if it becomes common. Table form

edit

I think the table form clarifies things. Bensaccount 20:45, 11 Apr 2004 (UTC)

I agree. It also makes it clearer that how to discuss an article isn't clear :-), so I added a bit more text; I also added another example about asking questions for the reference desk because I'm not sure that one example is enough based on all the questions the page gets. Angela--talk page link is exactly what was needed. I'm still learnin' what's available. THanks. Elf | Talk 04:11, 16 Apr 2004 (UTC)

New section table

edit

I've added a new section table at the top to a) explain what each section is for and b) remove the problem of the limit of template inclusions in one article. I think it makes things a little clearer. violet/riga (t) 14:41, 3 Oct 2004 (UTC)

This new look is obscenely bloated. Someone needs to compact it *A LOT*. →Raul654 19:45, Oct 3, 2004 (UTC)
You were right - I've changed it around now. Much better, I hope you'll agree. violet/riga (t) 19:58, 3 Oct 2004 (UTC)
No, it's still far too bloated. Both of those tables need to be merged and compacted. →Raul654 20:08, Oct 3, 2004 (UTC)
I've combined the tables. Any better? - 20:55, 3 Oct 2004 (UTC) Lee (talk)
 • Halló! It maight be quite iritating fro "newbies" to "to purge the server cache of this (Wikipedia:Village pump) page" if they edit a "subpage". Normaly you "return" to the subpage and do not see the message. This means that it is updated (imediately) only if someone visits and "purges" the cache for Wikipedia:Village pump.

Page layout

edit

I've removed the float:right from the table style as it was causing problems in classic skin (the text was overlapping the links down the left-hand side). If this causes other problems feel free to revert, but please try to find an alternative solution to the classic skin problem as well. – Tivedshambo (talk) 17:37, 28 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

What does everybody think about adding search links to each section of the Village pump (and their archives) using {{Google custom}}? See my example here: User:Teratornis/Sandbox2 (permanent link) (diff). --Teratornis (talk) 07:19, 2 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Looks great. I support. Thanks :) I would also love to see it expanded to cover the two earlier eras listed at Wikipedia:Village pump archive, in the future, if at all possible? -- Quiddity (talk) 04:59, 6 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
I don't know if the old archives are Google-able. They look to be old revisions of pages, rather than current revisions. Wikipedia's old revisions are viewable to us in the history, but to Google they are part of the deep web and are thus not searchable as far as I know. In any case, I will go ahead and add the search links to this template, since nobody objected. --Teratornis (talk) 08:56, 8 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
It looks like the archives under Wikipedia:Village pump archive#October 2004 - October 2007 are not Google-able, because they are actually buried in the revision histories. Probably a bot could turn them into proper subpages that Google could index, but I guess whoever set up the archive didn't decide to do it that way. The oldest archives under Wikipedia:Village pump archive#July 2002 - July 2004 are real honest-to-goodness subpages of Wikipedia:Village pump and should be searchable with this search from my table of examples in Template:Google custom#How to search subpage trees within Wikipedia:
Type this To get this What it produces, or searches for
{{google custom|en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Village_pump||Search Wikipedia:Village pump}} Search Wikipedia:Village pump Blank form to search only the "main" Village pump (does not find the parenthesized sections; does find archives from July 2002 - July 2004)
I tried a test search and I found some text from an old archive page. --Teratornis (talk) 09:10, 8 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Using a bot to turn the diffs into subpages would be good. (The original archives were handmade, and ceased being made in 2004. The current archive method was devised recently, and the diff links were created then (oct 26, 2007), as a quick-fix attempt to bridge the gap). Thanks again for your work on this :) -- Quiddity (talk) 20:09, 8 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
You're welcome. {{Google custom}} searches have been pretty helpful on the Help desk; presumably they are useful somewhere else. Next I might see if anyone would like to add a search link to {{SignpostNavigation}}. It might be interesting to systematically identify all significantly large collections of subpages on Wikipedia that would be useful to search. {{Google custom}} seems to work on everything except the article Talk: namespace. --Teratornis (talk) 05:29, 16 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Adding some icons

edit

What about making the template more attractive for an average user? I mean addning some icons (Tango project).--Kozuch (talk) 17:42, 24 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Please see thread at Template talk:Google custom#Broken link regarding the broken "search" links. --Redrose64 (talk) 11:46, 12 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hiding head sections

edit

I think hiding head section is necessary not to make confuse at WP:Village pump (all), or at least, why don't we show shortcut at WP:VP only? --kwan-in (talk) 03:15, 17 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

I reverted myself after reverting you -- I didn't realize what you were trying to fix, but I realize now that you wanted to remove duplicate headers in the "all" page, which seems like a good idea. :) I believe everything is okay now. equazcion (talk) 03:18, 17 Sep 2013 (UTC)

Adding a button for the homepage

edit

Maybe we can add a link to the homepage of the Village Pump in the template? I've tried doing this, three times, but there would always be some random garbage just floating around after I tried. The Master of Hedgehogs (converse) (hedgehogs) 14:10, 22 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Please don't do this again. If you want to modify a template, you should follow the procedure described at WP:TESTCASES. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 22:27, 22 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
