Tell 'em about their Watchlist

edit

Whenever I can create a bit of a conversation with a newbie (a few days after a Welcome), I point out that one of the first things most editors do, is to check their watchlist. I don't know if "Constantly check your Watchlist" is mentioned anywhere in the "You're Now a WikiPedia Editor" handout that is distributed at initial log-in (sarcasm)...but it should be. The more we can strengthen their desire to edit the more newbies we will retain. Maybe a quick mention in the WER Welcome.```Buster Seven Talk 21:36, 26 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

We need another template similar to this one but.....

edit

A welcome to use as encouragement for editors who have NOT yet made a contribution. Same basic template as this but geared to advise and encourage a first edit.--Amadscientist (talk) 00:53, 28 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

We need a short link to this on the Project front page, which itself is getting long and needs organizing. The "problems" are needs condensing, for example and other areas need to be a little more concise. But to make sure we can find it, this needs to be in the "things you can do" or similar. I think it is safe to say this is the official new user welcome for the project, even if we tweak it more. Dennis Brown - © Join WER 13:02, 28 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

  • D'oh, I see it already is now. There is so much going on, it is hard to keep up with everything here. Dennis Brown - © Join WER 13:04, 28 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
  • I should really keep you updated on some of these changes etc. I will start dropping you a note when major advances like this are made. Still a few things to work out. I'm a little new to Template coding.--Amadscientist (talk) 21:20, 28 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
    • hehe, well, I started the project while I was already busy, and the interest has exploded, so I've dropped most of my other activities as this is more important, but even this project is a group of projects, so I things here happens that slip my notice for a while, or get an idea and it takes me a day to say something, and then I see someone else already had the same idea. Its actually a good thing, meaning we are all on the same page. Dennis Brown - © Join WER 21:42, 28 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Road Test

edit

Took it (the template) out for a spin this A.M. It stalled going into the first turn. Might need a tune-up. ```Buster Seven Talk 19:25, 28 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

I left the proper coded link on the main project page so anyone reading that direction will have the proper link. I will fix the transclion bug today when i get a chance. Need a little research...or just ask for direction. LOL! I should be willing to ask... if I am telling others they may ask me for help!=)--Amadscientist (talk) 21:22, 28 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
Ive been using the template since yesterday. Everything runs smooth. I have a couple of ideas to run past you but not now. TC. ```Buster Seven Talk 13:35, 30 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

The work-in-progress newbie manual

edit

The Newcomers Manual (OK, it's more like "a brief introduction to some policies) might be worth linking to. I know I've mentioned it here; if people like it they could link newbies to it. Pesky (talk) 14:28, 31 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Simplified Manual of Style

edit

I have changed many other variations of Template:Welcome from the Wikipedia:Manual of Style to the Wikipedia:Simplified Manual of Style, but I didn't see an unintrusive way to rewrite this one to fit. Art LaPella (talk) 00:53, 16 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Code may intimidate

edit

This is an excellent template. However, it has a lot of code in it. If I was a new editor and hit "Edit" on my talk page after receiving it, I would immediately be faced with a massive wall of intimidating text gumbo, and might be scared away. For that reason, may I suggest that this template has instructions added to it that it should never be substituted. — Hex (❝?!❞) 14:29, 6 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
