The Environmental Protection (Single-use Plastic Products) (Wales) Act 2023 (Welsh: Deddf Diogelu’r Amgylchedd (Cynhyrchion Plastig Untro) (Cymru) 2023) is an act of Senedd Cymru which heavily restricts the supply of certain single-use products to consumers.

Background
editThe ban on single-use plastics in Scotland was commenced in June 2022.[1]
In 2020, the Welsh Government announced plans to ban certain single-use plastic products, including: straws, cotton buds and balloon sticks.[2] At the time, the Foodservice Packaging Association.called for delaying the legislation to 2022, on the basis that public health considerations relating to the COVID-19 pandemic should be prioritised over environmental considerations.[3]
Provisions
editThe Act included provisions for banning:[4]
- carrier bags,
- plastic drinking straws,
- plastic plates,
- plastic cutlery,
- plastic stirrers,
- cotton buds.
Commencement
editIn October 2023, the Act was commenced.[5]
Further developments
editA similar ban was enacted for England.[6]
