The Wise Man Built The House Upon The Rock, also known as The Wise Man and the Foolish Man is a Christian hymn for children, about Jesus Christ's Sermon on the Mount. The basis of this hymn is Matthew 7:24-27 from the Book of Matthew in the New Testament, which is parallel to Luke 6:47-49 from the Book of Luke.[1]
Melody
editThe structure of the Bible song has 2 parts that are the same but repeated. The time signature of the song is in 4/4.[2]
Lyrics
editThe first verse of the tune talks about how the Wise Man in Jesus's parable built his house on a rock. But then there was a storm, and the house on the rock stood still.
But the second verse talks about a parallel Foolish Man, which Jesus contrasts with him. This man, instead of on a rock, built on sand. And instead of surviving the storm, it gets destroyed ("went SMASH!").[3]
Meaning
editThe Wise Man represents those who built their lives upon the solid foundation of God's word. When the storms of life come, their faith keeps them standing strong. The Foolish Man, on the other hand, represents those who ignore God's teachings and do as they please. When trouble arrives, their lives come crashing down, because they have no secure foundation.[4]
