Unpunked Sound is an independent Brazilian band from Cuiabá, Mato Grosso, formed during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The band consists of vocalist and guitarist Renato Melón, bassist Fabinho Boretti, and keyboardist/DJ Gontcha.[1]

History

Formed amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, Unpunked Sound started as a duo by Renato Melón and Fabinho Boretti, later joined by Gontcha.[1] The band began producing music using their cell phones, focusing on themes like madness, paranoia, and the stress of the pandemic.[2]

In 2023, their music video for "UnBarbie" was featured on a digital panel at Times Square, New York, marking a significant achievement for the band.[3]

Unpunked Sound's music is influenced by various genres, including classic rock, Brazilian rap, pop punk, and funk. Influences include Iggy Pop, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Daft Punk, and Michael Jackson.[1]

Tours and performances

The band's first live performance was in 2022 at Negro Gato in Cuiabá.

In July,2024, Unpunked Sound performed at the prestigious Chapada Winter Festival in Chapada dos Guimarães, further solidifying their presence in the local and regional music scene. The band's diverse setlist and unique sound contributed to their growing popularity in the alternative music genre. Additionally, they were involved in cultural projects, including presenting an original book of poetry and song lyrics to Virginia Mendes, the First Lady of Mato Grosso, reflecting their commitment to both music and literary arts

In 2024, Unpunked Sound participated in the Bienal de Literatura LGBT at the Centro Cultural São Paulo, an important event that celebrates diversity and inclusivity in literature and the arts. The band's involvement highlighted their commitment to promoting LGBTQ+ representation through their music and artistic collaborations.[4][5][6]

Additionally, the band was featured in the Cine Teatro Cuiabá, where audiovisual works from Mato Grosso focusing on anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination were showcased. This event emphasized the band's dedication to social causes and their ongoing fight against discrimination.[7]

Unpunked Sound has also established a partnership with Simon Taylor, from Tomato UK, a renowned design and creative collective. Taylor contributed to the production of tracks such as *"Pacificus"* and designed the album cover for their 2024 release, *"Vibrators"*. This collaboration with an internationally recognized artist further highlights the band's artistic reach and innovation in blending music with visual arts.[2][8] They also performed at the Ver a Cidade Festival in 2022.[9]
