Description

edit

The Usbek & Rica magazine project was founded in 2008 by Jérôme Ruskin, then a student at the Lyon School of Business in France. After two years of trial issues, it materialized in June 2010, initially in the form of a “mook” (a hybrid between a magazine and a book), inspired by the review XXI, before quickly evolving into a quarterly magazine alongside an events business (notably with “The Court of Future Generations” conference-performances) and a corporate services branch. After an unsuccessful attempt to merge with the data journalism magazine Owni, the company, which at the time employed six people and around twenty contractors, made its first profits in 2013, with €800,000 in revenue, 70% of which was generated by creating websites for brands like EDF, Danone, and Bouygues Immobilier.[2]

In October of the same year, the magazine, which adopted the slogan "The magazine that explores the future," expanded its content to the web with the launch of its website usbeketrica.com.[3]

In 2017, with 3,000 subscribers and a circulation of 12,000 to 15,000 copies per issue, Usbek & Rica launched its YouTube channel and a series of free podcasts available on SoundCloud and iTunes.[4]

In February 2019, following the revelations surrounding the "Ligue du LOL," the magazine suspended journalist Guillaume Ledit.[5]

In July 2020, the magazine announced it would stop newsstand distribution and would only be available by subscription.[6]

Since October 2022, the magazine has been part of the CMI France group, which is majority-owned by Czech businessman Daniel Křetínský.[7]
