When Love Hurts is a 15-minute stage play that was first performed in Caerphilly Castle on 27th November, 2009, developed by the Drama group from Ystrad Mynach College.
Plots and Characters
editThe play opens with an introduction from the narrator. group of friends arriving in the home of Sophie Griffin. The friends consist of Sophie herself, a "girly girl" named Liane, Sophie's boyfriend Jimmy and a homosexual boy named Rhys. They arrive in Sophie's house and watch Rhys's audition for Britain's Got Talent. Sophie's younger brother, Greg, teases Sophie after raiding her wardrobe and putting her underwear over his head.
After Greg leaves, Sophie's mother, Jane Griffin, warns her that her father has gone to the pub. Sophie explains to her friends that whenever her father goes to the pub, he would bet on the horses, and if he loses, he comes home angry. When Greg hears about his father he suddenly becomes afraid, as if he blames himself for his dad's actions.
Sophie's father, simply known as Mr. Griffin, then arrives and confronts her friends, telling them to leave. After Sophie rushes to her bedroom, her mother comes in with his dinner. But accidently she stumbles and spills the food over the floor, to the disgust of Mr. Griffin. Before any physical harm can be done to Jane however, the narrator steps in and stops them. The two then address to the audience of their actions, and that Mr. Griffin needs help. Finally the narrator asks the audience to support their cause and stop women's abuse once and for all.
