History
editThe concepts for this open source hardware SynchroPhasor PMU project originated in an student's frequency sensor design in 2006 named the PHzMonitor project. The "Power Frequency Monitor" project and its model #2 frequency sensor were submitted as Entry# MT2227 into a MicroChip and Circuit Cellar Design Challenge 2007 contest[1]. The PHzMonitor project was later published in the article "Frequency Sensing Made Simple" in Circuit Cellar Magazine Issue# 231, October 2009[2].
The PHzMonitor project went through a series of revisions until 2010 when its micro controller was upgraded from the Microchip dsPIC30F3012 to the dsPIC30F3013 and evolved from a simple frequency sensor to a functional IEEE C37.118-2005 compatible Phasor measurement unit commonly called a "PMU".
This project has always been open source design and software. The name originally given to the PHzMonitor Model A was "openPMU". However, it was soon discovered that there was already an existing project named OpenPMU.[3] To avoid conflicts and disputes regarding project names, the new Open Source SychroPhasor PMU project was named the "GridTrak Open Source PMU" project.[4] The new PMU was named "GTosPMU" and its source code and documentation are published on CodePlex.
