I am a neurologist and ALS Researcher. One of the reasons I have become involved with Wikipedia is that my patients often come to me with articles downloaded from the Internet – often well sourced from Wikipedia! This is one of the fantastic ways that medicine has moved on from the bad old days of paternalism – now patients (or clients) are up to date, want to know more and are keen to become involved in research.
But some information out there (all over the Internet) is misleading, misrepresentative and gives false hope to terminally ill patients.... and even worse, sometimes a vulnerable section of people are exploited.
My hope is to see that the neurology research on Wikipedia continues to be well-written, peer-reviewed and a reliable source of information for those who need it most.
