Toor Ji Ki Baori / Jhalra (Step Well)

Toor Ji Ki Baori was constructed in Jodhpur during 1740s by a Queen (hailed from Patan, Gujarat having a famous step well therein) of Maharaja Abhay Singh’s Consort, in continuation of an age old tradition that Royal women used to build public water works. As occurs in all step wells, the steps go down to depth of water level providing easy water access round the year. At the depth to deep down of two hundred feet it showcases the hand carved precious art of Jodhpur’s renowned rose-red sandstone depicting intricate carvings of dancing elephants, medieval lions and cow water-spouts as well as niches housing deities which all were thrived in past.

History of well reveals that earlier the well had Wheel supported system drived by a pair of bulls encircling round over the top platform to fetch out water storing in two small accessible platforms and a separate tank.

This wells was though remained submerged with filth and debris for many years but in recent years it has restored and maintained at an extent.

The nearby area around the step well is in recent times has been surrounded by shops, market and residential houses.

The step well is surfaced as renowned tourist place of the city.

Significant fish swimming can be witnessed in the available water tank which is fed by the locals. The routine cleaning and maintenance of the step well is reportedly exercised by the volunteers
