Omar Ian Ávalos Gallegos
editBorn in Orange, California, March 25, 1979, and a lifelong resident of Santa Ana, California. A composer and musicologist and a longtime active guitarist in the Los Angeles Flamenco scene. He was primarily self taught in Flamenco guitar, and then later studied with other local guitarists Ted Mckown, José Tanaka, and Adam del Monte. He later attended courses in Flamenco guitar at the University of California Irvine during the New World Flamenco Festival with Jason McGuire, Jesús Torres, and Juan Antonio Suárez, “Canito”. Part of his learning experience has come by performing alongside the local Flamenco talent Gabriel Reyna. He most recently pursued studies in Flamenco guitar and composition in Seville (Spain) with Lito Espinosa.
His experience in dance accompaniment includes work with Los Angeles performers Juan Talavera, Yvette García, Ricardo Chávez, Evelyn Nasif, and Sarita Parra among others. He has performed at some of LA’s most reputable Flamenco venues; Alegría, Tapas, Luna Negra, and Café Sevilla. Much of his involvement has been in the university circuit; Cal Arts, Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State LA, Soka University, and at UC Irvine where he served as a dance accompanist to Dr. Nancy Reuter. Other educational institutions where Omar has been involved as a performer and collaborator include Fullerton College, where he has peformed and collaborated with Flamenco Dance instructor Rosa García, and at Santa Ana College where he has served as an associate music instructor since 2001.
