editThe Sydney Blue Sox hosted the opening game of the ABL on 6 November, against the Canberra Cavalry at Blacktown Olympic Park. During the 1–0 victory, a number of firsts for the league were recorded: Chris Oxspring threw the first strikeout, retiring Moon Kyu-Hyun; Tim Auty got the first hit, a single off the pitching of Steven Kent, as well as the first stolen base and scored the first run; Mitch Dening got the first run batted in; and Wayne Lundgren was credited with the first win, Heo Jun-Hyeok with the first loss, and Koo Dae-Sung with the first save.[1]
The following weekend, the four-game series against the Cavalry was completed. The Blue Sox secured the series win with a 13–3 win in game three after seven innings,[2] the first game to be called early under the League's run differential rule, a duplicate of that used by the International Baseball Federation. Sydney completed the series sweep the following day with their fourth consecutive win, ensuring them a joint-lead with the Adelaide Bite at the end of the first round.[3]
Sydney's first road-trip took them to the Brisbane Exhibition Ground to face the Brisbane Bandits. Despite a 3-run home run from Alex Johnson in the 5th inning, it wasn't enough to counter a team record 15 hits from the Bandits, resulting in the Blue Sox' first lost of the season 9–5.[4] In Sydney's first scheduled doubleheader, the first game due to go only 7 innings eventually went 12 before Brisbane won 4–3. In the shortened second game, Chris Oxspring threw a 1-hit shutout on the way to a 4–0 win to split the doubleheader.[5] Craig Anderson recorded his first win of the season after pitching 7 scoreless innings to lead the Blue Sox to a 2–0 win and a series split with the Bandits.[6] The split allowed Sydney to share the position of league leaders with the Adelaide Bite at the end of the second round.[7]
