Racist attitudes, ideas, and behaviors have gained strength in Cuban society during the last two decades mainly during the deep crisis known as “The Special Period,”. This period followed the destroying of the Soviet Union. In the 1990s, a group of then very young Cuban visual artists began to use art to talk about race, rather than about African influences in Cuban culture. This topic was already fairly important in Cuban art.
