Trinity College Dublin Exterior

Shirley Armstrong was one of the two women that was chosen to represent Ireland in the Olympic games in Rome in 1960. Shirley Armstrong won a total of 9 medals in foil at the Irish National Fencing Championships (six gold, two silver and one bronze), the first gold medal she won being in 1962. Shirley Armstrong also won 9 medals in foil at the Irish Open Fencing Championships (five gold, two silver and two bronze). Throughout her career, Shirley Armstrong was chosen to represent Ireland at two world fencing championships, Paris in 1965 and Vienna in 1971. Shirley Armstrong is also an Alumnus of Trinity college Dublin, where she won five of her Irish Open medals In the Trinity College Gymnasium. Shirley Armstrong’s died on 21 December 2018 and her death was commemorated by the Olympic Federation of Ireland Website “The Olympic Federation of Ireland was sad to learn of the passing of Shirley Armstrong Duffy.”

Trinity college Dublin, the department of sport and Dublin university central athletics club hosted an event on June 6 2012 to celebrate the participation of past and present Trinity college Dublin students in the Olympic games over the last 100 years. Shirley Armstrong was present at this event, she was chosen to be present at this event as she was an alumnus of Trinity college Dublin who took part in the Olympic games.

Dublin University Fencing Club

A fencing gym has been set up in honor of Patrick Duffy, Shirley Armstrong-Duffy's Husband, who was also a champion fencer. La Salle Duffy, which resides in Dublin 4, was set up in 2005 by Maître David Couper and Maître Fionbarr Farrell (a fencing student of Patrick Duffy). it is the first Salle d'armes that has been founded in Ireland in over 50 years.
