Tutorial week 3:

edit

Activity 1 - From Scratch[ Find an article on a topic that you are interested in or are knowledgeable about. Have a look at the first substantial edit on that page through its revision history. If you had created this article first - what would you have done differently? If you were the second reader, how would you have edited the article? Write up your thoughts on your user page (100-200 words is plenty).

Article: 'Camellia Sinensis'

If I had created the article first, I would have changed the order of the contents to follow a more logical order. It would look something like this: 1. Description 2. Nomenclature and taxonomy (which would include the green tea catechins diagrams) 3. Cultivars 4. Cultivation 5. Health effects 6. See also 7. References. This order makes the most sense as it begins by describing exactly what Camellia Sinensis is and is followed by its etymology and chemical grading. Following that would be the cultivars and cultivation which should follow each other and not be separated by other sections as they have a similar idea/content. After that I would include the ‘see also’ and ‘references’ sections. These two sections need to be at the end so that they don’t break up the flow of information.

If I were the second reader, I would have edited part of the section describing ‘Darjeeling’ and added the fact that tea harvested in spring, or in the ‘first flush’ is of a much higher quality and is often much more expensive than the second or third flushes. I also would have added a link to tisanes or herbal teas in the ‘see also’ section, as they are related topics. Finally, I would have added a picture which showed the whole bush of Camellia Sinensis rather than just a close up on the leaf. This would give an idea of how the plant grows.

  • Rewrote some of the sentences so that the tone of the article is less like an essay and more like an encyclopedia article

1-3 pm seminar

This lesson was helpful because it gave me a practical guide in how to set up my proposal and final article for the assessment tasks. It is always helpful when you are shown what to do and can do it as you are shown.
