Administrative action review (XRV/AARV) may be used to review an individual action that required the administrator toolset, or any of the advanced permissions granted at Wikipedia:Requests for permissions (excepting Confirmed and Extended Confirmed). This board's purpose is to facilitate discussion of such actions to determine whether they are consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Threads are closed by an uninvolved administrator noting whether the action is endorsed or not endorsed. Any follow-up action is deferred to existing processes. This board is limited to discussing individual actions (or sets of related actions); it is not the place to request comment on an editor's general conduct.

Administrative action review should not be used for actions with a separate dedicated review process. For review of page deletions or deletion discussion closures, use Wikipedia:Deletion review. For review of page moves, use Wikipedia:Move review. For review of arbitration enforcement actions, use the arbitration enforcement noticeboard, the administrators’ noticeboard, or the Arbitration Committee's amendment requests page. Blocks marked with any variation of {{CheckUser block}}, {{OversightBlock}}, or {{ArbComBlock}} can only be reviewed by users with the permissions needed to access relevant materials; Contact the Arbitration Committee.

Instructions

  1. Before listing a review request, attempt to discuss the matter with the performer of the action as this could resolve the matter more quickly. There could have been a mistake, or misunderstanding, and a full review may not be needed. Such discussion also gives the performer the opportunity to clarify their reasoning.

  3. Inform the person of this discussion.

    You must leave a notice on the editor's talk page.

    The use of ping or the notification system is not sufficient for this purpose.

    You may use {{subst:XRV-notice}} ~~~~ to do so.

    Manually listing a discussion
    You can also do this manually by creating a new section, copy-pasting one of the templates, and filling it out.
    Copy this template skeleton if requesting review of an action on a page (including articles):

    {{subst:XRV
    |page=
    |action = <!-- The action you're asking to be reviewed -->
    |performer = <!-- Name of editor who performed the action -->
    |discussion = <!-- Name of the section of performer talk page where discussion took place -->
    |reason =
    }}  ~~~~

    Copy this template skeleton if requesting review of an action on a user:

    {{subst:XRV
    |user=
    |action = <!-- The action you're asking to be reviewed -->
    |performer = <!-- Name of editor who performed the action -->
    |discussion = <!-- Name of the section of performer talk page where discussion took place -->
    |reason =
    }}  ~~~~

Participating in a discussion

Any editor may participate in discussing an action being reviewed. The goal of the discussion is to determine whether the action is consistent with Wikipedia's policies. Contributions that are off-topic may be removed by any uninvolved administrator. You may choose to lead your comment with a bold and bulleted Endorse or Not Endorse, though any helpful comment is welcome. Please add new comments at the bottom of the discussion.

Closing a review

The closer should summarize the consensus reached in the discussion and clearly state whether the action is endorsed, not endorsed, or no consensus.

Post-closure outcomes are deferred to existing processes. Individual actions can be reversed by any editor with sufficient permissions. Permissions granted at WP:PERM may be revoked by an administrator.
