John Pilson
editJohn Pilson (born 1968) is an American artist and professor at Yale University and Bard College.[1][2] John Pilson is known for his photographs and videos depicting the relationship between human behavior and the corporate environment. He currently lives and works in New York, NY[3]
Early Life and Education
editJohn Pilson was born in New York, NY in 1968. He graduated with a BFA from Sarah Lawrence College in 1991 and received his MFA from Yale University in 1993. [4]
Work
editJohn Pilson has worked primarily with still photography and video. His earliest works were photographic portraits of people in simple corporate settings. In continuation with his interest in the corporate aesthetic, Pilson made photographs between the years 1994-2000 at a Manhattan investment bank while he worked night shifts as a computer graphics operator. These photographs culminated in the release of a book titled Interregna, published in 2007 by Hatje Cantz[5] In 2000, Pilson began making multichannel video installations and short films depicting men in suits acting in an unconventional and often preposterous manner against the backdrop of the corporate setting. Pilson has continued to make films about the relationship between human behavior and the corporate environment with Saint Denis (2003) and Wisdom and Charisma (2006).
Exhibitions
editHis work has been included in several solo and group exhibitions in the United States and abroad, including solo exhibitions at Nicole Klagsbrun Gallery in New York in 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2006. His work was included in the Venice Biennale in 2001, where he received the special prize for young artists.[3] Pilson has exhibited works at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center and most recently a solo exhibition at the Hamburger Kunsthalle in Germany.
