SH 281 was planned to be Dumas - Oklahoma or Fort Worth - Jacksboro. 16 was to stay on what became 283, 283 on what became 81, and 81 on what became 16 (changed because it would have crossed US 81). Trying to figure out what 287 296 298 were reserved for in late 1938:

  • SH 29 Port Lavaca - SH 185 (probably 287)
  • SH 45 Jasper-east (probably 296)
  • SH 87 Deweyville Spur (probably 298)
  • not sure why SH 293 needed to be split

Note that SH 285's assignment in 16135 provides strong evidence that 281-298 were assigned at this time but not actually finalized until late 1939; in particular 285 was assigned to former 16 Riviera - Falfurrias and then the number was extended west when Falfurrias - Hebbronville was added
