Kovačević moved to Singapore with his parents at the age of 4, and at the age of 6 joined the youth academy of Singapore Premier League club Lion City Sailors. He got promoted to their senior team at the start of the 2022/23 season, and in that same season he won the Young Player of the Year award. In June 2023, he secured a move to Premier League club Arsenal for 4.1 million, making him the most expensive player to be sold from the Singapore Premier League.
Kovačević represented Bosnia and Herzegovina at U17 and U20 levels, and represented them at the Fifa U-20 World Cup 2019 in Poland, where they made it to the semi-finals and lost against Ukraine, and he won the Golden Ball alongside Lee Kang-in. He made his senior international debut in February 2022, becoming his country’s youngest ever debutant.
