Wikipedia Instructions
editBias
editTo ensure that your wikipedia article is successful you need to avoid bias. The point of a wikipedia article is to educate the reader on the topic rather than trying to influence them or prove a point. Wikipedia has a rule that states the article should be from a "natural point of view", meaning that it is not leaning towards one side of an argument. Rather, points should be given from all sides. Articles about fish do not have extreme controversy, but there are certain situations in which disagreements can occur. For example, some people believe that certain fish can be pets in homes but others believe that those fish should stay in their natural habitats. While this situation is valid, opinions on this matter should not be discussed on wikipedia. So, in order to have a successful article, write from multiple perspectives and show the readers the different views that others are looking from.
Organization
editThe article should include images or other media in an organized manner and in appropriate locations. You should make sure the media is related to the information in the paragraph correlated to it. For example, a photo of a starfishes diet should not be included with the information about the lifecycle of its species. It is also important to not overwhelm the reader with media to the point where the reader would be distracted from the content. Another thing is that the article should have an appropriate structure. The article should not bounce around with information or have details that do not go along with the information around it. The topics of the article should flow with each other. For example, you should not be explaining the life cycle of a species in the middle of a paragraph about the taxonomy of the animal.
Content
editIn order to have a good article you should have s strong lead. A strong lead includes having a brief overview of all the information from the article and it must be in good proportion to the entire article. For example when analyzed the article about starfish I compared it to other articles about fish and the average length of their intros was about 350 words. The content should include the taxonomy, anatomy, life cycle, ecology, evolutionary history, and human relations. Adding sources helps you to better understand your topic as well as make it easier for you to write about it. The more reliable sources you have, the better your article will be. By citing your sources it shows your readers that the information is not original knowledge but rather information from multiple places which makes you more credible as an author. There should also be a place for the references, external links, and the bibliography. You should also use wikilinks to refer to subjects that your audience may not be very educated about but you should never cite sources from wikipedia. The article should be written into depth about the topic. The two articles I analyzed have an average would count of about 5000 words excluding the references and bibliographies.
