History
editEstablishment
editOn 16 August 1874 the Harbours and Rivers Department was established, but the department was abolished from 1 January 1894 then re-instated on 1 February 1902. In the Queensland Blue Books from 1874 until 1878 " Harbors Lighthouses and Pilots" and "Engineer of Harbors and Rivers" are listed as separate entities under the Office of the Colonial Treasurer. In 1879 the word Engineer was dropped from the name of Harbours and Rivers. From 1894 until 1901, the two entities were incorporated under the one heading, "Marine Department. Comprising Harbours, Lighthouses, Pilots, Magazines & Dredges." The Queensland Blue Book 1902 again listed the Marine Department and the Harbours and Rivers Department as separate entities, and these listings continued in the Blue Books to 1916 and the Public Service Lists 1917 to 1928. Spelling changed from Harbor to Harbour in 1877.[1]
