Atelier René Knip is a Bloemendaal-based art studio founded by René Knip in 1992. His work focuses on the dividing line between flat and three-dimensional graphic design. With his renowned talent for type design, he brings subtle, but visually interesting stories to everyday objects.
History
editAfter studying at the Academy of Visual Art St. Joost in Breda and graduating with distinction in 1990, René founded Atelier René Knip in 1992. From then on he started his long-standing career in type design and art. His lettering, calligraphy, and typography are architectural, built, and constructed rather than drawn or written. The architectural character lends itself very well to application in real architecture: in buildings, on walls, floor tiles, and so on. The relationship between the letters and their surroundings is not clear-cut; it is as if the letters themselves are part of the built environment.
Over the past 30 years, Knip has been busy in the environmental type design world, creating large-scale architectural type designs for institutions across the globe, holding countless international lectures and workshops, and becoming a member of the Alliance Graphic International.
Currently, René is focused on product design, creating customizable pieces for in and around the house.
