The crest of Sendai is derived from the mitsuhiki-ryo (三ツ引両, also known as the tatehiki-ryo; 堅引両), which is one of the many Date family crests. The mitsuhiki-ryo was redesigned to make it resemble the letter 仙 (sen) from 仙台 (Sendai). The mitsuhiki-ryo was originally given to Date Asamune, the first head of the Date family, from Minamoto no Yoritomo.
Sendai's official flower, tree, bird, and insect were all determined in 1971, through a residental vote.
