I'm Yongsu Ahn, a phd student starting the Information Science and Technology program in the School of Computing and Information this fall.
I graduated from master's program in Information Science at UNC with a minor of Biostatistics. Before coming to the United States, I completed my Bachelor's at Sungkyunkwan University. Studying Information Science and Computer Engineering as dual major was a starting point of my academic journey leading me to this fascinating field.
My focus on research always looks at the society. I would like to observe how people communicate with each other, and how information diffuses in the social network in quantitative manner. Researchers seem to call this focus of research Computational Social Science. I believe statistical and computational approaches will expand its horizon with more available datasets and advanced methods. I hope my research will help the society with identifying people's collective behaviors and emotions.
Another focus of my research interest is information visualization. Backed up by Prof. Lin's instruction and advice, I will be working on the visualization project representing how policy is adopted among the states in US. As I acquire more sense of the visualization techniques, I would like to make it deliver more understanding of the data to users.
