Own Africavision Song Contest

Own Africavision Song Contest 2, often refered to as OAfSC #2, is the second edition of the Own Africavision Song Contest. The contest took place in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, following Hawa Boussim's win in the 1st edition with the song "Hme ye". It was the first time Burkina Faso had hosted the contest. Organised by the Own African Union of Broadcasting and host broadcaster Radio Télévision du Burkina, the contest was held at the Stade du 4 Août, and consisted of two semi-finals and the final. The three live shows were hosted by Hawa Boussim.

A record of forty-six countries participated in the contest. Algeria, Comoros, Egypt, Gabon, Guinea-Bissau, Lesotho, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco and Niger made their debut this edition. Angola, Benin, Burundi, Equatorial Guinea, Malawi and São Tomé and Príncipe withdrew for various reasons.

Host City

Ouagadougou
Location of the host city.

Ouagadougou, is the capital of Burkina Faso and the administrative, communications, cultural, and economic centre of the nation. It is also the country's largest city, with a population of 2,200,000 in 2015. The city's name is often shortened to Ouaga. The inhabitants are called ouagalais. The spelling of the name Ouagadougou is derived from the French orthography common in former French African colonies.

Ouagadougou's primary industries are food processing and textiles. It is served by an international airport and is linked by rail to Abidjan in the Ivory Coast and, for freight only, to Kaya. There are several highways linking the city to Niamey, Niger, south to Ghana, and southwest to Ivory Coast. Ouagadougou has one of West Africa's largest markets, which burned down in 2003 and has since reopened with better facilities and improved fire-prevention measures. Other attractions include the National Museum of Burkina Faso, the Moro-Naba Palace (site of the Moro-Naba Ceremony), the National Museum of Music, and several craft markets.

Semi-final Allocation Draw

edit

The draw to determine the allocation of the participating countries into their respective semi-finals took place on 10 July 2020. The draw decided in which half of the respective semi-finals each country would perform, with the exact running order determined by the producers of the show at a later date. Twenty countries participated in each semi-final. From each semi-final, ten countries joined the host in the final, where a total of twenty-six countries participated.

The forty semi-finalists were allocated into six pots, based on their geographical place and cultural similarities. Drawing from different pots helps in reducing the chance of so-called neighbour voting and increasing suspense in the semi-finals. Each time a country was drawn from the pot, its semi-final and half of the semi-final was determined.

The six pots were the following:

Pot 1 Pot 2 Pot 3
Pot 4 Pot 5 Pot 6
