The Foundation for People with Learning Disabilities is part of the Mental Health Foundation, a UK charity founded in 1949, and operates as a directorate within the charity.

The Mental Health Foundation originally funded both learning disabilities and mental health research, but as the distinction between learning disabilities and mental health problems increased, in 1999 the decision was made to take the learning disabilities work forward under a new brand, the Foundation for People with Learning Disabilities.
