History
editThe Downtown Athletic Club was originally a club and later a skyscraper clubhouse as well. Founded in 1926 by a group of Lower Manhattan businessmen, the club first installed itself in the Singer Building, since demolished, on Broadway.[1] According to Christopher Gray, the buildings and landmarks columnist for The New York Times, “From later reports it is clear that these men, headed by Schuyler Van Vechten Hoffman, a financier, had an entirely separate building in mind from the start.”[2]
