Welcome!
editHi, this account is for myself, Sydney, for my Gender & Ws 410 class.
My Experience
editI honestly have never tried to edit a Wikipedia page before, so I had no idea where to start. I definitely followed the instruction slides word for word as it was helpful for a first-timer. I understand now why teachers were always telling students to be weary if using Wikipedia as a source because literally anyone can edit/create a page on Wikipedia.
Honestly, the instructions were sometimes a little confusing, so I found it helpful to experiment on my own. The slides were useful in case I had a very specific question like how to create a heading. It was also very useful to change the editing to visual to see all the options I could use instead of having my text in quotations.
Adding the references list section challenged me. It took me awhile to find the insert button to add the references list. The slides showed an insert button, but then I realized that the references list was an option underneath the plus button. Then I got confused about how to add the citation. I eventually figured it out and realized that this is a great tool. The system automatically creates the citation for you which saves a lot of time.
Regarding the revision history, I thought it was helpful to see who edited the page before you and what specific edits they made. The compare selected revisions button was useful in the way you could see the original version as well as the newly edited version.
My Chosen Artist
editFor my artist, I chose to edit Orlan. I chose this artist as there was already an error banner and this artist had less than 10 references. Researching further about Orlan certainly was interesting. Orlan transformed her face over multiple surgeries in the 1990s and is a pioneer of what she calls "Carnal Art."[1] I find this concept of art interesting and would like to learn more about Orlan's work. This specific book goes into further details about Orlan's surgery in art and her performance.[2] It must take a strong woman to physically alter her face multiple times. More information about Orlan that I will use in my Wikipedia-a-thon edit can be found at this external link to The Art Story Organization's website.
