INTRODUCTION
Shimansky is a retail diamond jeweller specialising in diamond, tanzanite and platinum jewellery.
Founded by CEO Yair Shimansky [TB1] in 1991, the diamond manufacturing company started off at a flea market in Durban, South Africa, only to become a retailer all around South Africa, with seven jewellery stores countrywide and one secured location in New York City.
Shimansky is its patented diamond cuts, the My Girl diamond and Brilliant 10 diamond, together with a variety of signature jewellery designs, including the Millennium, Evolym and Two Hearts diamond ring.
HISTORY
At the age of 22, Yair Shimansky embarked on a two-year trip to Japan, where he studied the art of diamond cutting and polishing. In 1991 he arrived in South Africa where he started his own business by crafting and designing diamond jewellery.
During his time in Japan, Yair was introduced to the Japanese culture of perfection, which lead him to the path of sourcing his own rough diamonds. In the early stages, Shimansky bought the rough stones from diamond dealers but as time passed, he entered the world of diamond cutting and polishing. Today, Shimansky sources rough diamonds direct from South African mines.
Platinum
With over 25 years of experience in Platinum jewellery, Yair Shimansky is a leading authority on Platinum jewellery manufacturing. The South African jewellery designer discovered the metal during a business trip to the US in the early 1990s. The metal gained popularity after it was banned for the manufacturing of jewellery in World War II. South Africa is home to over 80% of platinum.
PATENTED JEWELLERY DESIGNS
Brilliant 10 Diamond [1]
The Brilliant 10 diamond is a 71 facet round brilliant cut diamond design developed and patented by Shimansky. The Brilliant 10 is currently has no light leakage, in which all of the light that enters through the table and the crown is reflected back. In contrast, a regular round brilliant diamond with 57 facets loses around 8%-12% of light even if it’s cut to ideal proportions, in which the light loss is around the girdle area of the diamond.
My Girl Diamond[2]
The My Girl diamond is the first internationally patented diamond cut to originate from South Africa. The My Girl diamond is an eight sided square-cut diamond with a diamond-shaped table. The essence is its ability to reflect light from all sides. Only a select number of rough diamonds are suitable to become a My Girl diamond, that when polished delivers a balance of fire, brilliance and scintillation.
Millennium Diamond Ring[3]
The Millennium ring is designed to celebrate the journey of two lives becoming one. The Shimansky original was designed with technical precision and innovation in mind.
Evolym Ring[4]
The words ‘My Love’ written in reverse. The Evolym ring’s setting radiates brilliance when viewed from any angle due to its 360-degree exposure to light. From the side, the diamond can be seen from the table to the culet, meaning the entire diamond is visible to the eye and resting between three bands.
CELEBRITIES
In 2004 South African born actress Charlize Theron wore a 47-carat Emerald Cut diamond necklace, along with a beaded Ralph Lauren dress to celebrate her Oscar win for 'Monster'. A life-size replica of her Shimansky necklace and the actual dress she wore is on display at the Shimansky Showroom in Cape Town.
Shimansky jewellery has also been worn by a number of other celebrities, including Christina Aguilera, Vera Farmiga, Lionel Richie, James Blunt, Bryan Adams, Abigail Clancy and Katie Melua.
