Scale Development and Construct Clarification of Servant Leadership (Barbuto & Wheeler)
editFor starters, there is a lot of primary work throughout this article. The safest portion of the article to use would be the literature review because this is where the author cites work from other researchers. From the literature review, the research that would be appropriate for Wikipedia are the parts where the researchers use others sources to define Servant Leadership, as well as the other sources used to explain the phenomenon that they were focusing on, which is scale development and construct clarification within studying Servant Leadership. For example, the article states "Servant leaders are described as categorically wise, and their decision processes and service orientations appear to be vehicles for invoking organizational wisdom, described as the meshing of applied knowledge and informed experience to make both optimal and altruistic choices" [1]. This could be used, in my own words, in Wikipedia because it is information from an article by Bierly, Kessler, & Christensen, but Barbuto and Wheeler using it in their literature review makes it a secondary source, since two qualified researchers found it reliable enough to use in the literature review of their study. Something that can't be used is anything cited that came from primary sources, or personal research as it is called by Wikipedia. None of the data from Barbuto and Wheeler's assessments can be used in Wikipedia because this data, unless used in another peer reviewed article, has been validated by any other researchers.
Servant Leadership, Procedural Justice Climate, Service Climate, Employee Attitudes, and Organizational Citizenship Behavior: A Cross-Level Investigation (Walumbwa, Hartnell, & Oke)
editLike Barbuto & Wheeler's article, there are citations of personal research throughout the article. There are a number of different citations from work done by Greenleaf and Spears, and although they arent being directly cited from their own work, it is still tricky one whether this information should be cited on Wikipedia or not. The researchers could be taking a side, or citing this information to support a specific view of the topic of Servant Leadership. Good information that can be used are definitions that are cited from other researchers. For example, "Hale and Fields (2007) defined servant leadership as “an understanding and practice of leadership that places the good of those led over the self-interest of the leader, emphasizing leader behaviors that focus on follower development, and de-emphasizing glorification of the leader” (p. 397)"[2]. This is good information to use in Wikipedia because this definition must be deemed reliable by many qualified researchers if the article is in a peer reviewed journal and it is being cited in other researchers work. Something that may not be safe to use is "In the present study and consistent with past research (e.g., Ehrhart, 2004; Liden et al., 2008), we conceptualize servant leadership as ambient behavior directed toward the leader’s entire work unit that is a common stimulus shared among group members". This may not abide by Wikipedia's rules because it is a mixture of secondary and primary work. The researcher is using another study to try and support their articles key findings, or the intentions of their study.
