The American film, Google Me was released in 2007 and was directed by Jim Killeen. Jim Killeen uses the Google search engine to find men with the same name as him, Jim Killeen, to make a documentary of their different qualities they portray. These men were located all over the world such as: Denver, St. Louis, Melbourne and Scotland Killeen visits each of these men personally to interview them. The documentary is able to show not only the fact that all these men have the same name in common but how different their lives are from one another. The purpose of this film is to show how powerful Google can be for the people who use it and how it is able to connect you to people all over the world. Suggestions for changes:

  • add link for documentary film
  • make second sentence grammatical

Plot (Madelyn)

edit

This movie starts off about a man, Jim Killeen, who impulsively chose to go beyond the decision to do a mere late night Google search of himself, and decided he would create a documentary based on the lives of those men who share his name. Killeen made the decision to be thorough in his endeavors and took the extra step to travel to the location of these men to get the full scoop on the stories of their lives. He faced more rejection than expected initially when extending the offer to travel to the location of his fellow Killeen's, but ultimately learned the stories of some very interesting men. Through his project he is introduced to a filmmaker, cop, priest, and even a distant relative and essentially men from all walks of life. This movie is not only a tale of a group of men with one common denominator and many other variables that reveal the beautiful complexity of life, but a platform to show the power of Google and the doors it opens for mankind. These two components make for brilliant stories and great insight on the power of technology in today’s social setting.[1]

Themes (Annie-Grace)

edit

Through the use of Google, one man was able to link humanity and life through something as similar as a name. The director, Jim Kileen, conveys that life is much more than names and words, every person has a story to tell.[3] Gracey8112 (talk) 02:06, 13 September 2016 (UTC)

Production (Nicholas)

edit

The documentary "Google Me" began production in 2007 and was inspired by the star of the project, Jim Killeen. Because of his interest in the project Jim produced the movie using his own funding, which is not a generally used strategy in creating a film. The film was produced in multiple cities including New York, Australia, Ireland, and Denver.[4]

On November 25, 2007, the film was wide released.[5] It was released in US theaters on April 25, 2008. Later, it was released on DVD on September 1, 2009.

Critical Response (Holly)

edit
Los Angeles Times described the movie as “Entertaining.” Efilmcritic.com gave the movie “★★★★" and also said, "Google Me' should by all accounts be forgettable fluff, but Jim Killeen's passions always motivate the material, and this appealing documentary finds the right note of compassion to hold on." My West Texas described the movie as “Special.” Cnet’s News.com said the movie had “Valuable Insights.” Burke Leader said the movie had a “Potent Theme.” The Washington Post described the movie as “An inspiring truth about being human.”

Audience Response (Michael)

edit

The film "Google Me" is organized and structured in a way that presents a clean and crisp[6] semi-professional film to the audience. The aspect that primarily hinders the film from being a 'blockbuster' in the ticket office is the aspect that the films budget is fairly limited to the directors (Jim Killeen) personal finances.[7] The act of typing ones name into the google search bar is relatable to the audience as most internet users have been curious at one time or another about what the web has to say about us. The film is most interesting to the viewer when director Jim Killeen decides to travel to learn more about the 6 Jim Killeen's in their respected homelands: Ireland, Scottland, New York City, Denver, St. Louis and Australia[8]. The apparent aspect that holds the documentary back, apart from it's limited budget, is the aspect that the director Jim Killeen dedicates too much camera time to himself and his own life story.[9] The time spent on Jim Killeen's (the director) own life story limits the amount of time the film focuses on the 6 other Jim Killeen, which offer a much different and interestering perspective on life as a whole[10].
