RfA Results and Thanks

edit
Bookofjude/Archives/April 2006-May 2006, thank you for supporting me in my recent RfA. Although it did not succeed as no consensus was declared (final: 65/29/7), I know that there is always an opportunity to request adminship again. If and when that day comes, I hope you will once again support me. If at any time I make any mistakes or if you would like to comment on my contributions to Wikipedia, you are more than welcome to do so. Regardless of your religious, cultural, and personal beliefs, I pray that whatever and whoever motivates you in life continues to guide you on the most righteous path.

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #2

edit

The Barnstar Brigade is a new program aimed at giving more very deserving yet unappreciated users barnstars. It will officially start on 2006-04-09, but signing up is encouraged before this date:
"Here in Wikipedia, there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go un-appreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go un-noticed. Sadly, these editors often leave the project. As Esperanzians, we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. A project the size of Wikipedia has thousands of editors, so there are plenty of people out there who deserve recognition, one just has to find them. The object of this program is not to flood editors with Barnstars, but to seek out people who deserve them, and make them feel appreciated."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Information
Welcome to the second issue of the new format Esperanza Newsletter - we hope you still like it! This week, it was delivered diligently by our new dogsbody. MiszaBot (run by Misza13): any execution complaints should go to him. Content comments should be directed at the Esperanza talkpage. Thanks!
  1. The next elections: Approval voting as before and, also as before, an previous leadership member can run. Please submit your name for voting in the relevant section of this page. Voting starts on 2006-04-23 and ends on 2006-04-30. There will be three places up for grabs as KnowledgeOfSelf is leaving Wikipedia. Please see the previously linked page for full details.
  2. The Code of Conduct is now ready for extensive discussion! Specific comments should go to the Code of Conduct talk page, discussion of having one at all should be directed to the main Esperanza talk page.
  3. The current process for accepting proposals for new programs has been deemed fine. All Advisory Council members and the Admin Gen are to endevour to be bold when viewing discussion. If they feel that consensus has been reached, they will act accordingly.
A plea from the editor...
The propsed programs page is terribly underused! Please leave any comments, good or bad, on the page, to help us determine the membership's thoughts on the ideas there.

Ref converter

edit

You are receiving this message because you are on the Ref converter spamlist

I'm working on a new beta version of Ref converter to properly handle {{ref label}} and multiple refs to the same note. It is located here. I'd appreciate any feedback or bug notes on this new version. So far it tentatively handles ref labels and I will be adding multiple ref support soon. Once I think it's good enough it's going to overwrite wikirefs.pl and become the main version. --Cyde Weys 03:41, 14 April 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for your work on Torchic, it needed the copy edit. I was wondering if it were possible for you to revert the references, the new system doesn't work very well and I'm not particularly comfortable with it. Thank you for everything and I hope you'll joined the debate. Cheers, Highway Rainbow Sneakers 11:53, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

Thank you, its in the middle of an FA right now, and I'm not exactly sure how to work it. If you could revert it for now until the nomination is over and then I'll see which is better. The FA is getting really stressful and it'd be easier if they stayed the same for now. Thank you for improving this, my head is just very fucked up at present. Thanks, Highway Rainbow Sneakers 16:34, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

Hey, the Torchic FAC has ended and unfortunately we didn't make (¬_¬ Raul is on my list) and I was wondering if you could either re-convert the references in Torchic or tell me how to do it. I would try it myself, but I am famous for fecking such things up, and I know a single link is referenced several times. VandalProof 1.1 is Now Available For Download

edit

Happy Easter to all of you, and I hope that this version may fix your current problems and perhaps provide you with a few useful new tools. You can download version 1.1 at User:AmiDaniel/VandalProof. Let me warn you, however, to please be extremely careful when using the new Rollback All Contributions feature, as, aside from the excessive server lag it would cause if everyone began using it at once, it could seriously aggitate several editors to have their contributions reverted. If you would like to experiment with it, though, I'd be more than happy to use my many sockpuppets to create some "vandalism" for you to revert. If you have any problems downloading, installing, or otherwise, please tell me about them at User:AmiDaniel/VP/Bugs and I will do my best to help you. Thanks. Ref converter 2.0

edit

You are receiving this message because you are on the Ref converter spamlist

With bated breath after much work I am proud to announce that Ref converter 2.0 has arrived. This new version properly deals with all ref labels and note labels, as well as multiple refs linking to the same note. There's also some miscellaneous bug fixes. I had to rewrite a good portion of the Ref converter from scratch, but it was worth it! The older version is no longer accessible online. Please give the new version a whirl, and of course, if you run into any bugs, leave a bug report! --Cyde Weys 04:26, 17 April 2006 (UTC)

Ref converter update

edit

You are receiving this message because you are on the Ref converter spamlist

Ref converter has been updated once again. It now takes care of Harvard references (I didn't even realize they existed). I'm still looking for input on how best to handle {{ref num}}s. I've also added some additional sanity checks to the code that should catch more potential problems. As always, if you run into anything going wrong, leave a bug report! --Cyde Weys 09:04, 18 April 2006 (UTC)

Ref converter has been updated once again. This time I have created "WikiLinks", which automatically generates a fresh list of articles with old reference styles that need converting. Just run WikiLinks, open up a bunch of the resultant links it give in separate tabs, and go through each tab one-by-one and convert those references. --Cyde Weys 06:42, 21 April 2006 (UTC)

references at nanking massacre

edit

I'm trying to have the references at Nanking Massacre cleaned up. I notice that you've said that there's "nothing wrong with them". If you had checked the article's talk page, you would see why the article had been tagged: It's an extremely controversial subject, with disagreement even about the most basic of "facts". There are 10-20 books referenced at the bottom, and tons of external links, but only seven footnotes. The tag is there to encourage people to add footnotes indicating the source of each point of contention. If we don't do this, then we find that the Japanese POV-pushers and the Chinese POV-pushers can delete/change something by saying, "That's not true, and there's no reference, so I'm deleting it." One of the key "contributors" to the article has stated flat-out that he is against adding footnotes (presumably because it will make his POV-pushing more difficult.)

So that's why I added a "citation style" tag, not a "citation cleanup" tag (although I don't know if such a thing even exists): the "style" needs to be changed from a useless list of reference texts to useful set of footnotes. I didn't add the "This article doesn't list its references" tag, because the references are actually listed, they're just set up in such a way that they are next-to-useless. Am I correct in using "citation style" or is there a more appropriate one available? Bueller 007 15:28, 21 April 2006 (UTC)

No worries. Thanks again for your help on the cleanup thus far. Bueller 007 12:47, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

Ref num converter

edit

You are receiving this message because you are on the Ref converter spamlist

I have just updated Ref converter to handle {{ref num}} links. I am not entirely sure of the correctness of the new code, though, so I have uploaded it as a testing version here. Please use it for now, especially on pages that use ref num, and contact me with any bug reports. If no bugs are detected by 2006-04-24 00:00 UTC then I will overwrite the old version of the ref converter with the new version and you can go back to using wikirefs.pl. --Cyde Weys 17:24, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

Overuse of refconverter

edit

Unreflective use of refconverter is causing many problems, and in many cases actively harming Wikipedia. The tool is nice to have—in fact, it's the impetus for me creating my own "Citation Tool" (still alpha). But it is nice to have to aid editors who are actually involved in editing a specific article, and who have reached consensus about making a given type of change to an existing article. Unfortunately, the semi-bot is largely being used to make "drive by 'improvements'" to articles where editors either have not considered the citation style, or where they have actively decided on something different from what the tool produces. This is extremely disrespectful to other Wikipedia editors, and a gross violation of process.

I have not looked at your specific changes made using the semi-bot, but I strongly recommend that you follow a guideline along the lines of: "Use this tool only after consensus for a change has been reached on the talk page of the article to which it is applied!"

You may also want to take a look at User:Evilphoenix/ref conversion. This is a sketch of an RfC that may be filed to try to resolve this problem (I see no reason you might not opine there, even while it lives in userspace). Ideally, Cyde will back off his insistence on changing all articles, even where against editor consensus. But unfortunately, his attitude has only become more belligerent when I have repeated requests in this regard. I think a positive involvment of well-meaning users of the semi-bot might help matters resolve amicably. Lulu of the Lotus-Eaters 02:34, 24 April 2006 (UTC)

You can ignore his threats. He's been trying to pull this on me all day, and when he realized it wasn't working, he used my Ref conv spamlist to go out and directly threaten ref conv users. "This is extremely disrespectful to other Wikipedia editors, and a gross violation of process." - No, Lulu, what you are doing is extremely disrespectful to other editors. --Cyde Weys 02:43, 24 April 2006 (UTC)

I would equate the use of straight quotes to that of using --/--- for em-dashes. It's easier, but it's not necessarily the better thing to do :) It would be nice if the whole Wiki was using them eventually :D I understand that others may revert the template, but I don't think it will be because they are "high use"... how often do you look that closely at the references section of articles? porges(talk) 01:08, 29 April 2006 (UTC)
