Bunchies are green alien-looking cartoon creatures which became something of an Internet phenomenon. They were created by Aaron St. Goddard and animated by Roel van Mastbergen. The popularity of Bunchies is believed to have begun when a user from the Penny Arcade forums with the username of Kelet posted the image in response to a dramatic thread.
Since then, it took off. It quickly became one of the most photoshopped images on the net, and much to the surprise of Aaron St. Goddard, his pointless invention became an overnight Internet success.
There is now a project underway by the official Bunchies team to create a 3D Bunchies movie, most likely to be distributed online for free.
Since July 2006, on the Hong Kong forum "miniforum", there are over one hundred members that use photoshopped Bunchies as their avatars, a testament to its popularity and an example of an internet meme.
The creature has been adopted as the semi-official mascot of the forums at the Guerrilla News Network site (GNN.tv), the users of which have rechristened him "Forbes." According to the blog of GNNer Namaste_Rich, "Our own ZenSwashbuckler described him, and even gave him his now famous (infamous?) name: 'it’s what (GNN user and real-life environmental geneticist) Snark, being a tool of the bourgeoisie and directed to do their genetic bidding, has been working on in the secret laboratory we keep in the suburbs. This is Quadruped 4-B, affectionately nicknamed “Forbes,” comprising genetic material from llama, leech, salamander, and French poodle subjects. Friendly and affectionate as hell unless cornered — and then God help you, you poor *expletive*. It is still (I believe) uncertain and unproven as to whether Snark did in fact create this creature in a lab. However, Forbes is without a doubt given the ability to be let loose by any GNN Guerrilla to post at will, especially when blogs or threads are posted against its alleged maker.'"
In Germany, it is named "Oktolon" and "Hüpfvieh" - which could be translated as "jumping cattle".
In Poland, the most common name used is "Hasacz" (read: Hasatch), which can be translated as "roamer".
On the Albino Black Sheep website and forums, Bunchies are referred to as Buttley.
In Hungary, it is named "Zöldszar" (which translates to "green shit") and "Faszláma" ("dick llama").
In Iran, it is called "Ahamdinjalama"
In Argentina, it is called "Bicho Feliz" (which translates to "Happy Bug").
In Israel, it is called "Pinhas" (Which is an Israeli name that is considered to be funny).
