In the Shadow of Statues is Mitch Landrieu's non-fiction account of how he grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana and came to understand the pain that several statues associated with the American Civil War causes in the present to so many people. He also came to realize that their very existence on public property continued to support institutional racism, even when the majority of his city's population had turned against racist views and practices.
The book's cover also presents a subtitle in the same font as the main title, as if to prepare the reader for what he or she will likely experience while reading it: A White Southerner Confronts History.
