Synopsis

Based on Roch Carrier's short story, The Hockey Sweater, the film centres around Derek, a resident of Port Alberni, British Columbia. He and his friends are big Vancouver Canucks fans, but Derek is in the unique position of being the only person in the group without a Canucks jersey. After saving up some money, he goes online in search of one. After some searching on Google, he comes across a bargain $20 jersey and decides to order it.
After a week, the jersey arrives. But to Derek's horror, the company had mixed up the order and instead sent him a jersey of the Canucks' hated rivals, the Calgary Flames. Derek phones up the company and gets them to send him a replacement jersey, but it will take another week for it to arrive. Derek, frustrated, heads out for his daily roller hockey game, debates to himself whether to continue playing without a jersey (thus risk being ridiculed for not having one) or to wear the Flames jersey until the Canucks one arrives (and thus risk being taunted for that as well). He eventually decides on wearing the Flames jersey, due to the identical results of both decisions and also because the thought of being jerseyless didn't appeal to him.
He arrives at the rink with a Flames jersey on. His friends, understandably, stop and stare at him as he enters, but they don't say a word. Throughout the game, Derek calls for a pass but nobody passes to him. After a while, he gets frustrated and almost starts a fight with one of his friends. He accuses his friends of not passing to him because of his Flames jersey, and storms off.
Derek mopes for days in his room, waiting for his replacement jersey to arrive. Finally, a package does arrive and he excitedly opens it, anticipating the end of his horrible week. However, the company had mixed up the order again. He doesn't find a Canucks jersey inside the package; instead, he finds a jersey for the United States national hockey team. The film ends here.

Trivia
edit- The filming location for "Port Alberni" is actually Steveston Village in Richmond, British Columbia.
- The outdoor hockey rink is actually a lacrosse rink located in Steveston Village.
- Most of the outdoor audio was recorded at Wreck Beach and Pacific Spirit Regional Park, in the University Endowment Lands west of Vancouver.
- The entire film was shot with a hand-held camcorder with minimal artificial lighting.
- Because of an on-set technical problem, all the sounds were recorded with the camcorder's microphone rather than a boom mic.
