John W. Taft
editJohn Walter Taft (born February 2, 1960, in Buffalo, NY) is a representational landscape painter and plein-air artist, recognized by Southwest Art Magazine in April 2006, as an artist to watch. Taft grew up in Western New York working in the fields of his father's wholesale tree nursery. From a young age he appreciated the landscape around him and how "the mundane can become music, even a symphony, the ordinary, beautiful." [1]
Taft studied design (1979-1981) at the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York and illustration (1981-1983) at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. In 1986, he moved to New York City and began a successful 18-year career as a designer and art director in television. However, after a visit to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, John felt called to follow his dream as a full-time painter. In 2004, with his wife and family, John moved to Colorado where the "variety and beauty of the west, with its grand mountains, had strong appeal in both subject and spirit."[2]
"Taft's paintings capture the majestic western landscape in all its seasonal glory, from winter's snow cap mountains to falls brilliantly colored aspen trees." [3]
