Iowa Hawkeyes football is the intercollegiate football program representing the University of Iowa. Established in 1872 as a club sport, the team played its first intercollegiate game in 1889 against Grinnell College[1], marking the beginning of organized football at the university. Over the years, the Hawkeyes have competed in various conferences, including the Western Interstate University Football Association (WIUFA) and later, the Big Ten Conference.

The program has experienced periods of success, including early conference championships, and challenges, such as a suspension from the Big Ten in 1930[2] due to recruiting violations and the economic impact of the Great Depression. The 1939 team, known as the "Ironmen," is often remembered for its performance during that season, which included Heisman Trophy winner Nile Kinnick.

Iowa Hawkeyes football has been shaped by various coaches over the years, including Forest Evashevski and Hayden Fry. Under current head coach Kirk Ferentz, the team continues to compete in the Big Ten Conference and regularly participates in bowl games.
