"Obsessed" is a song by American recording artist Mariah Carey, taken as the lead single from her twelfth studio album, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel. It features backing vocals from The-Dream, who wrote and produced the song with Carey and Tricky Stewart. According to her husband Nick Cannon, the concept of the song came from a line in Mean Girls (2004). The song is a midtempo number with an urban beat, deriving from R&B, pop, and hip-hop music. Although Carey denied the claims, the media took the song as another chapter in the feud between the singer and rapper Eminem, and a response to "Bagpipes from Baghdad" from his Relapse (2009).

The song received positive to mixed reviews from critics. While complimenting the lyrics and production, some critics disaprooved of Carey's light vocals on the track. While charting in the top ten of the United States, France, and Italy, "Obsessed" reached the top twenty in most other music markets. Carey set several chart and certification records, including raising her RIAA-certified Platinum singles count to twelve, the most by any female artist. The song's accompanying music video sees Carey being followed by a male stalker, whom Carey also portrays. Media also speculated that Carey's male doppelganger was another shot at Eminem. The official remix of the song features American rapper Gucci Mane, and a video was released to support it. Carey performed the song a number of times, including on America's Got Talent.

Background and controversy

On June 9, 2009, Carey tweeted about the lead single from her upcoming album, revealing the title and coining it, "one of her favorite songs ever." It was officially revealed online on June 16, 2009. Immediately, media outlets assumed that the lyrical content of the song was directed at rapper Eminem as a diss track his "Bagpipes from Baghdad" from his 2009 Relapse album. Years previously, Eminem had released a string of tracks from previous albums, such as, "Superman," "Jimmy Crack Corn" which either claimed that he had a sexual relationship with Carey, or was said to be inspired by that. However, Carey has insisted that they went out only a few times and had nothing physical. In 2003, Carey's "Clown" from her Charmbracelet was said to be directed toward Eminem.

In the Relapse track, Eminem disses Carey and her husband, Nick Cannon, warning Cannon to back off Carey, claiming the singer as his, before Cannon he could have the "whore." Cannon fired back at the song, saying that Eminem's career was based of "racist bigotry," referencing __________________ Cannon further elaborated on his blog and "I thought we got past the days where white men could spew vulgar obscenities at our beautiful queens and get away with it," comparing Carey's heritage to that of President Barack Obama and her beauty to that of First Lady Michelle Obama While Carey said that the "Obsessed" was not directed at Eminem,
