The Court of Justice of São Paulo State (Tribunal de Justiça do Estado de São Paulo, or TJSP, in Portuguese) - is the highest court in the brazilian state of São Paulo, with seat in the state capital, the city of São Paulo. The Court of Justice of each brazilian state is the appellate or second instance court in the court system of Brazil. The Court of São Paulo is the appellate instance of judgments handled by law judges from jurisdictions in first instance. Its responsibilities are defined by the Constitution of the State of São Paulo. The main role of the São Paulo Court of Justice includes judging civil and criminal cases and controlling the state constitutionality of statutes and ordinaries laws. The TJSP consists of over than 300 judicial districts (comarcas in Portuguese) through out the state and has 2.600 trial and appellate judges; in 2015, the amount of ongoing processes in TJSP reached 26 million in total.[1] Therefore, São Paulo State Court of Justice is one of the world´s largest courts.

Digital processes

Back in 2005, Brazil passed a law that enable judicial entities to receive processes in the digital format. TJSP was one of the first state courts in Brazil to undergo a digital transformation. "TJSP conducts more than 25% of the country’s proceedings, the widest-used state court in Brazil. Performance results would be magnified by its stature as the judicial system responsible for one of the largest population centers in South America". With a goal of reaching 100% digital in 2015, the team finished by the end of November, a month ahead of the deadline.[2]

Judge Paulo Dimas de Bellis Mascaretti has been elected president, or chief judge, for the 2016/2017 term.[3] Judge Mascaretti has declared aiming an agile, modern court, supported by technology.[4]
