El Bollullo Beach
edit- Overall characteristics
El Bollullo Beach, located in the municipality of La Orotava, is a beautiful and secluded beach of black volcanic sand characterized by its extraordinary clean waters and quiet environment. It is sorrounded by cliffs of 400 meters with no remarkable vegetation. The temperatures oscillates around 24 degrees Celsius throughout the whole year.
- Type of beach
As many other beaches in the Canary Islands, El Bollullo is a black sand beach, with its origin in the erosion of volcanic rocks. The beach does not have any reefs to protect it from the waves, so it is recommended that only very experienced swimmers get into the sea. The sand disappears at certain times during the seasons due to high tides. El Bollullo has perfect conditions for the practice of surf and other extreme aquatic sports.
- Services
Even though El Bollullo belongs to a touristic city, it is a little crowded area due to its difficult access. Local lovers of body boarding and surfing are the most familiar and frequent visitors to this beach. The fastest and easiest way to get to the beach is walking from the restaurant El Rincon, which also belongs to the city of La Orotava, by a stepped path that runs between banana plantations and takes you to the sand in a few minutes. There is also a longer but more beautiful way that starts from Puerto de la Cruz in a journey of about 45 minutes. From the tourist resort of Puerto de La Cruz, there goes a coastal road that connects El Bollullo with other beaches nearby. This path is used daily by tourists and hikers. It requires a bigger physical effort, but it has better views and corners to discover.
The beach counts with lifeguards service provided by Red Cross.
El Bollullo does not have the equipment required to the access of people using wheelchairs.
The space to leave the car is quite limited. There is a roadside restaurant, Restaurante El Bollullo, and a café - bar on the beach. The owner of the restaurant allows parking on his properties, upon payment of 2.00 € for the whole day. The café is located at the bottom of the cliffs, in the sand, and it offers tapas, especially seafood, and cold beverages.
