[[alt=|{{}}| '' [[]]]] Alex Gardega (born December 18, 1968) is an American artist predominantly known for his mention in various New York City media sources surrounding his oft eye-catching and flamboyant urban art projects, in addition to his more traditional body of work paying homage to classical masters. A fine artist and professional muralist by trade, Gardega’s choices of mediums and subjects are both diverse and unconventional.
Early life and education
editBorn in Cleburne, TX, to Alexander and Edwina (nee Flathmann), Gardega relocated with his older sister Jennifer and younger siblings Racheal and Marcus to Long Island, NY when he was 12 years of age, settling in the township of Huntington, located 40 miles east of New York City. Upon graduation from Cold Spring Harbor Jr./Sr. High School in 1987, Gardega moved to New York City with less than $100 in his pocket, eventually enrolling in the School of Visual Arts. He recalls that the day after arriving in Manhattan he sold a glass etching for the sum of $10,000.00, but also recollects nights spent on benches in parks during leaner times.
