The Podesta Group is a DC-based bipartisan government relations and public affairs firm that assists with branding, crisis management, strategies involving legislation, and message development[3]. The firm was initially founded in 1998 by former Republican strategist Dan Mattoon and Tony Podesta[4], and was known as the PodestaMattoon. In 2006, however, Mattoon decided to create his own public relations firm, and left PodestaMattoon, which then became the Podesta Group.

Podesta and the Environment

How does Podesta help out a premium beef company when the US Department of Agriculture refuses to allow it to voluntarily test its cattle for “mad cow” disease? Podesta protects their clients' rights in the market place by organizing a highly successful press conference at the National Press Club to launch a combined public relations and government relations effort[5]. This successfully announces the company’s lawsuit against the USDA for not allowing voluntarily testing for Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE)[6]. The press conference and media follow-up generates national and international print and broadcast stories, including in the agriculture trade press.
