Their target demographic is teens ages 14 to 18 and emerging artists. The organization received its federal recognition of 501c3 status in Sept 2007. There are a number of things that make the Cypher a unique organization. The location is a 2 level creative venue, first floor event space, second floor production studio. The space was created by artists for artists. The floor and walls are Murals showcasing artists from around the world. The Venue hosts a variety of arts and entertainment based events such as music showcases, dance competitions and interactive art exhibits. The NycArtsCypher specializes in Old School themed events, Break dancing competitions, and Graffiti Art shows. Popular programs offered at the Cypher are: CYPHER CYNDIKIT BBoy Crew where participants are encouraged to learn about teamwork, routines, and staying in shape. The crew then performs at high profile community events. BREAKOUT! is a media arts program that spotlights kids and emerging artists in positive arts and entertainment activities and then broadcasts segments as "webisodes". M.U.R.A.L. (Motivate Understanding Realizing Artists Learn) gives teens who have an interest in graffiti art an opportunity to access a safe environment where they are directed to utilize their skills in positive ways, as well as possible career paths in the arts. This Critically acclaimed program was documented by the NycArtsCypher and submitted to the 2010 Staten Island Film Festival. It received the award for "Best Documentary Short" and starred notable artists such as Gano Grills, Meres, Geoff Rawling and Tats Cru.
