Chika Idu, one of Nigeria's most talented contemporary artists, has been growing in popularity since the start of his career. Chika was born on September 28th 1974 in Niger Delta, Nigeria. He graduated from Nigeria 's art college Auchi Polytechnic in 1998, and has participated in numerous highly successful national group and solo exhibitions. The preparation that goes into Chika Idu’s canvasses is prodigious. He never puts knife to canvas without exhaustive priming. This day long treatment involves over laying different colours of primer with an acrylic finish. It is this practice that provides the textual substance that bonds subjects to canvas and lends his works it’s contemporary antiquity. Idu’s works explore daily experiences and although fluent in several mediums, he is best known for his oil on canvas creations. Chika’s popular themes include children, female portraits, landscapes and African ceremonies.
