School of Law & Political Science, Ocean University of China
School of Law & Political Science was formerly the Research Institute for Law of the Sea established in 1980. In 1998, Law School was officially founded. In 2006, Law School and College of Public Administration merged with each other and have become today’s School of Law and Political Science, and become a key academic unit in liberal arts, which enjoys a strong support from the university. The school is comprised of three departments, i.e. Law, Political Science and Public Administration, which offer degree programs covering subjects of law, political science, administrative management, public administration and sociology.
School of Law & Political Science has 18 master degree programs in the area of international law, environmental & natural resources law, constitutional & administrative law, economic law, political science, sociology, international politics and administration as well as specialized master’s programs in master of public administration and juris master, etc. The school also has the right to grant doctoral and post-doctoral degrees.
The environmental & natural resources law is a key academic discipline of Shandong Province, and law is a major of excellence in Shandong Province and an academic discipline with distinctive features at the national level.
The School has such research institutes as the Institute for Law of the Sea, the Institute forEnvironmental Law and Sustainable Development, the Institute for Law ofInsurance, the Institute for International Politics, the Sino-Australian JointResearch Center for Coastal Zone Management, the Institute for Sociology and the Institute for Polar Politics and Law. The School also houses the Center forMarine Law Literature and a website for the environmental & natural resources law of China.
Many important research organizations are based at the School, including Environmental &Natural Resources Law Association under the Law Society of Shandong Province,the Key Research Center for Humanities and Social Sciences under the Ministry of Education, as well as the Ocean Development Institute under the National KeyResearch Center for Philosophy and Social Sciences with “Project 985”. Most faculty members at the School are vibrant young teachers with Ph.D. degrees. In recent years, the school has published over 30 academic books on law,sociology, public administration and political science, as well as over 400research papers in academic journals, including Social Sciences in China,Sociological Studies, China Legal Science and Journal of Literature, History and Philosophy etc.
Totally, over 50research projects were conducted by the faculty of School of Law &Political Science which includes 11 National Social Science Fund Projects andover 40 projects of provincial and ministerial level, and 20 of them have won awards above the provincial level. We are also undertaking the UNDP/GEF program and other international programs. Faculties have been actively involved in the legislation, both locally and nationally. Altogether 47 legislation projects were carried out by our faculty, 28 of which are national laws and regulations and 19 are local regulations in coastal area.
In the past 30years, the School has made great contributions to China’s legal education, the development of Chinese legal system as well as legislative perfection,especially in the field of marine law and environmental law. The School also attaches great importance to international exchange and cooperation. We have already carried out cooperative research and joint education with international organizations, universities and research institutions in different countries.
