The Sudbury Community Foundation is an independent public foundation and registered charity. The Foundation has been a gateway to the community since 1996, enabling donors to create philanthropic legacies that will benefit Sudbury, Ontario and its people both now and in the future. The Foundation's unique combination of grant-making expertise, knowledge of community needs, professional financial and fund management expertise, and knowledge of donor philanthropy, provides donors with higher impact for every dollar donated. In addition, it gives local charities access to a permanent flow of grant dollars. [1]

History

edit

The Sudbury Community Foundation was established in 1996 as a registered public foundation by a group of local citizens. With support from Tom Davies, then Regional Chair of Sudbury, and an initial endowment from the Regional Municipality, the Foundation began the task of raising a fund to benefit the community.

Since then, the Foundation’s endowment holdings have grown in excess of $1.5 million, and over $95,000 has been distributed as grants within Greater Sudbury.

The Sudbury Community Foundation has also spearheaded a number of community projects, including Our Millennium, a national program dedicated to encouraging Canadians to celebrate the new millennium by giving gifts back to their community, and Countdown for Kids, a matching fund campaign for children under the umbrella of Ontario Endowment for Children and Youth in Recreation.

Like other community foundations in Canada, the Sudbury Community Foundation, since 2007, has also published annual Vital Signs reports.

In 2009, the Foundation introduced Jazz Sudbury which is a major fundraising initiative that will introduce the first ever jazz festival to Northern Ontario.[2]

Foundation Initiatives

edit
Vital Signs is an annual community check-up conducted by community foundations across Canada that measures the vitality of our cities, identifies significant trends, and assigns grades in at least ten areas critical to quality of life Vital Signs is based on a project of the Toronto Community Foundation and is coordinated nationally by Community Foundations of Canada. Greater Sudbury’s Vital Signs first publication was in 2007.[3]
Jazz Sudbury is a multi-season set of cultural events, culminating in an annual jazz festival, which started in 2009 on the grounds of Science North. Jazz Sudbury also includes an annual Cabaret event and an online talent search seeking future jazz stars from Northern Ontario. [4]
